Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a medical issue that has become all too common in many households. ADHD is on the rise among children, and many families now find themselves struggling with the fact that one of their family members has ADHD.

Amphetamines, methylphenidates, atomoxetin, and dextroamphetamines are drugs commonly used for the treatment of ADHD. These drugs are known by the brand names Adderall, Ritalin, Concerta, Focalin XR, Methylin, Metadate CD, Wellbutrin, Vivanse, and Strattera. All of these drugs, except Strattera, are stimulants.

One of the most common methyphenidates used to treat ADHD is Ritalin. Some patients are effectively treated by Ritalin. Some parents, however, report that Ritalin only aggravates their children, who become more aggressive or display other adverse symptoms.

Another commonly used drug for ADHD is Concerta. Concerta is also a methylphenidate. Unlike Ritalin and other methylphenidates the makers of Concerta have developed a time release technology that administers a steady dose of methylphenidate throughout the day.

Adderall is also commonly used in the treatment of ADHD. Adderall, also known as “Amphetamine Mixed Salts,” is a mixture of amphetamines and dextroamphetamines. Adderall is a drug that is available in both tablet and capsule form.

In some cases, none of the above mentioned drugs work for an individual with ADHD. In these cases, Strattera, as opposed to stimulant drugs, may be the medication of choice to treat ADHD patients. If Strattera doesn’t work either, often the doctor will prescribe an antihypertensive drug.

Scientific and clinical studies have shown these drugs to be effective in the treatment of ADHD. There is no denying, however, that there are a number of incidences of side effects linked with the intake of these medications. Most side effects are mild, but severe adverse effects have been experienced by some individuals using these medications.

If your child is currently on medication for ADHD but is troubled by side effects, you may want to try ADHD alternative treatments. When switching to alternative treatments, it is helpful to consult your child’s doctor before trying alternative treatment for ADHD.
